I think I want to stay a bit longer in sales. Do i lie and say i still work there? Do i say i was layed off? Or should i be brutally honest and admit that i just wasn’t really good at the job. I haven’t started applying but i’m terrified about explaining this to recruiters. The first two i quit for better opportunities, but frankly I did not have stellar results at either.

This is my third sales job after graduating in December 2019. My manager never really prepared me for it - a few weeks ago everything was rosy and then he just dropped it on me the day i got back from vacation. I lost deals due to a mix of budget, maturity, or competing priorities. Also, they put me on a brand new and immature market once we got acquired (worked it for 6months before getting fired). The product i was selling was a nice to have and not a need to have and was pretty expensive. Ran great demos and usually had a follow up scheduled if i was able to uncover their BANT on the first call. I did ok at the top of funnel (booked about 3-4 meetings a week). We were acquired by our competition in December and only one market has been consistently selling. In the year I worked there I didn’t sell a single contract. I’m in the second year of my career after college and worked at social impact SaaS startup as a business development manager (prospect my own mid-market leads and close them). As long as you need to lol the world wont stop turning) (Sorry if this is stream of consciousness but this is one of the few places I can document something like this. I cant give up the ability to make 100k+ with no college degree and a sketchy background. Something I am genuinely passionate about.Īfter looking at salaries, interviewing a couple places and researching alternate fields I could go into. I figured id finish up my chem degree and get a research-based job. I honestly did not want to get back into sales for the first like. The break has been really nice after so many hectic years but it has also been a massive blow to my self esteem. Luckily, I had money saved up and I qualified for the maximum amount of unemployment my state can give me. I made an obscene amount of money at this firm and after a few weird years beforehand this job was my "Aha" moment for sales. Kicked me after they realized recovery wasnt happening. I was fired back in February after being one of the top reps in my region for 2 years then hitting a horrible slump that I did not recover from.
